  At China National Materials Group Corporation’s Zhongfang Chemical, there is a team that has deeply embedded green development into its very DNA. With “pragmatism” as their guiding principle and “innovation” as their creative force, they have embarked on a decade-long journey of relentless pursuit, starting from scratch and rising to every challenge. Along the path of technological breakthroughs, they have not only achieved leaps—from nothing to something, and from good to excellent—but have also forged a pragmatic, innovation-driven route for sustainable development amid the industry’s broader wave of green transformation. They are the Waterproofing Agent Team at the R&D Center of China National Materials Group Corporation’s Zhongfang Chemical.

   01 A Group of People: Building on Practical Action, Starting from Scratch to Set a Green Course

  In 2014, the Waterproofing Agents Group began in a modest laboratory, with just four members, a few desks, and a handful of pieces of equipment—its entire inventory. Yet such material scarcity never constrained the group’s intellectual richness or its broad vision. Under the leadership of Dr. Li Jianhua, the team—70% of whose members are Party members—set from the outset a steadfast course: “Green, low‑carbon practices lead development, and green manufacturing drives progress.”

  “What we’re doing is not just technology—it’s a commitment to the future,” Dr. Li said, capturing the team’s most humble yet unwavering original aspiration. This promise quickly took root in concrete projects. The team’s first major challenge was tackling the industry‑wide, widely recognized problem of achieving superior oil resistance in oilfield workwear. At the time, advanced oil‑repellent finishing technologies for high‑end workwear were long monopolized by foreign firms, resulting in exorbitant prices and subpar performance. Rising to the occasion, Dr. Li and his team packed their bags and went straight to the customer’s production facility. Each deployment often lasted more than a month, during which the team personally experienced the grueling conditions workers faced in high‑temperature, oil‑stained environments, seeking on‑site breakthroughs. Over countless days and nights, they meticulously refined and fine‑tuned pre‑treatment, dye‑fixing, and post‑finishing processes.

  During that period, the team endured countless failures and restarts, yet it was precisely this pragmatic, “nailing‑down” spirit that enabled them to ultimately overcome this formidable challenge. The team successfully boosted the oil‑resistance performance of their workwear from the industry standard of 130 points to over 140, securing the contract with an outstanding result—marking the first breakthrough in domestically produced oil‑resistant workwear and fulfilling their commitment to provide better protection for industrial workers. This project served as the very first cornerstone on the team’s journey of growth, profoundly reinforcing their understanding that all innovation must take root in practical action and sprout from real‑world needs.

 

   02 United in Purpose: Demonstrating Pioneering Spirit Through Practical Action and a Sense of Responsibility in Times of Crisis

  If oilfield projects represent the arduous journey of entrepreneurship, then the outbreak of the COVID‑19 pandemic in 2020 was an extreme test of this team’s original mission and its capacity for emergency response. In the early stages of the epidemic, disposable medical protective suits were in short supply nationwide, while the core finishing technology for reusable protective suits remained entirely undeveloped in China.

  Faced with an urgent national need, the Party branch of the General Technology New Materials–China Textile Chemical Research and Development Center, where the waterproofing‑agent team is based—a stronghold that has earned the Group’s “Five‑Star Party Branch” title for four consecutive years—swiftly mobilized. At the branch meeting, party members spoke with unwavering resolve: “We have extensive experience in developing specialized protective additives. If not us, who will step up at a time like this? We must rise to the challenge!”

  Pragmatism, at critical moments, manifests as a sense of responsibility that springs into action upon receiving orders. Team members bid farewell to their families and promptly returned to their posts, dedicating themselves to overcoming the challenge of “reusable medical protective‑clothing finishing technology.” It was a race against time. Laboratory lights burned through the night, with team members meticulously scheduling every step down to the hour. Benchmarking against the most stringent international standards of the day, they repeatedly refined the formulation and rigorously tested the fabric’s performance after washing—ultimately delivering an impeccable result. The finishing process they developed not only enabled the treated fabric to meet high‑level international protective‑wear standards but also solved the global challenge of maintaining performance even after 100 washes. This breakthrough was swiftly translated into commercial products, effectively alleviating the acute shortage of protective supplies at the time and, at the source, reducing the environmental impact associated with single‑use protective garments.

   03 One Thing: Break the Impasse Through Pragmatic Action, Overcome Obstacles, and End Technological Monopolies

  The path of green development demands steady, measured progress at every step. In the textile chemicals sector, the environmental pollution caused by traditional fluorine‑based water repellents has long weighed like a towering mountain on the industry’s conscience. Developing fluorine‑free alternatives is widely regarded as the “Mount Everest” of the field. Confronted with this formidable challenge, the water‑repellent team chose the most “pragmatic” yet painstaking approach: they stationed themselves for extended periods on the front lines of application‑plant workshops, braving scorching summers and bitter winters, and drew inspiration from nature’s “lotus‑leaf effect.” The research process was fraught with difficulties; the microscale world is exquisitely delicate, where even a slight adjustment in an additive formulation or a hair‑thin variation in processing parameters can undo all previous efforts. Through countless trials—employing techniques such as synergistic compounding, infrared pre‑drying, and high‑pressure calendering—the team ultimately unlocked the “control code” for mastering the micro‑ and nanoscale realm.
